What Does “Fully Accredited Psychotherapist” Mean?

A fully accredited psychotherapist is someone who has completed extensive training, gained professional experience, and been recognised by a professional body as fit to practice. In Ireland, the main accreditation body is IAHIP, which requires high standards of education, training, and supervised clinical practice.

Future regulation by CORU will set a Master’s Degree (Level 9 NFQ/QQI) as the minimum qualification for psychotherapists once the register is established.

I hold a Master’s Degree (Hons) in Psychotherapy (CIT/MTU) and have been awarded the European Certificate of Psychotherapy (ECP) by the European Association of Psychotherapy in Vienna. This certification requires:

  • At least 7 years of recognised study and training

  • A minimum of 3,200 hours of education, supervised practice, personal therapy, and professional recommendation

Psychotherapists generally undergo longer and more advanced training compared to counsellors, which ensures depth and breadth of clinical experience.
